The Whole World Belongs to You?

“Be content with what you have;
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize nothing is lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.”
~ Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

The Whole World Belongs to You

Lao Tzu here advocates to be satisfied with whatever you have and be happy with the current circumstance. This makes some sense. Research shows that happiness is somehow a subjective mentality. Thus, it is fine to be content with what you have.

On the other hand, Lao Tzu's message is misleading. Realistically, how can people who live in poverty realize nothing is lacking? How can you tell homeless people the whole world belongs to them?  We cannot just deliver such illusion to deceive people's mind. Instead, real work must be done to address the issues of injustice and social inequality.
